When people think about measuring aging, they usually imagine something complicated.

Blood biomarkers.

DNA tests.

Brain scans.

A biological-age algorithm.

But some of the most useful clues about how well your body is functioning require almost no technology at all.

A chair. A floor. A few meters of space. And your own body.

Researchers have studied simple measures such as walking speed, balance, grip strength, and the ability to rise from a chair because they capture something laboratory numbers don't always show:

What can your body actually do?

In fact, the World Health Organization defines healthy aging partly around maintaining the functional ability to live and do the things that matter to you.

So today, instead of another longevity theory, let's try something.

1. Can you stand on one leg?

Stand near something stable in case you need support.

Lift one foot from the floor and see how comfortably you can maintain your balance.

Don't turn this into a competition over seconds.

Instead, notice:

Does it feel surprisingly easy - or surprisingly difficult?

Balance depends on several systems working together, including vision, sensory information, coordination, and physical capacity.

And it's one of the simple measures researchers use when assessing physical function as people age.

2. Can you stand up from a chair without using your hands?

Sit in a stable chair.

Cross your arms over your chest.

Now stand up.

Then sit back down under control.

Try several repetitions.

This simple movement asks your legs, balance, coordination, and nervous system to work together.

Researchers use standardized chair-rise tests for exactly this reason.

The interesting question isn't whether you can do one today.

It's whether you want to still be able to do it easily decades from now.

3. How fast do you naturally walk?

Don't deliberately speed-walk.

Just pay attention to your normal pace.

Walking speed sounds almost too ordinary to measure.

It isn't.

Gait speed is one of the simplest measures of physical function studied in aging research.

In large observational studies, slower walking speed has been associated with poorer health outcomes and higher mortality risk in older adults.

Your walking speed isn't a diagnosis.

But the ability to move confidently and efficiently is an important part of maintaining independence as you age.

4. How strong is your grip?

In research and clinics, grip strength is usually measured with a device called a hand dynamometer.

So squeezing your own hand at home won't give you a meaningful scientific score.

But here's why grip strength belongs on this list:

It tells researchers much more than how strong your fingers are.

Grip strength is widely used as a simple marker of overall physical capability.

A large systematic review found that lower grip strength was associated with higher mortality risk - and unlike several other physical tests, this relationship was also observed in some younger populations.

Sometimes a tiny measurement can reveal something much bigger about the body.

5. Can you get down to the floor - and back up again?

This one combines several abilities at once.

Mobility.

Balance.

Coordination.

Strength.

Get down to the floor in whatever safe way feels natural.

Then get back up.

Don't worry about whether you used a knee, hand, or piece of furniture.

Instead, pay attention to how many compensations you need.

Because this is what functional aging ultimately looks like in real life.

Not a number on a laboratory report.

The ability to move through your environment without constantly needing assistance.

Don't turn these into a score

There's an important caveat.

These aren't five DIY medical tests that can calculate your biological age.

Performance varies with age, injuries, health conditions, training history, and many other factors.

And one bad result doesn't mean you're aging badly.

The more useful question is:

What happens to these abilities over time?

Can you preserve them?

Can you improve them?

Because aging well isn't simply about avoiding disease.

It's about preserving enough physical and mental capacity to continue doing what matters to you. That's also central to the WHO framework for healthy aging.

So perhaps once in a while, instead of asking:

“What is my biological age?”

Ask something simpler.

“What can my body still do?”

And then make sure the answer stays impressive for as long as possible.
